Flavien Prat was named the Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week for January 30 – February 5, 2017 following a four-race win streak at Santa Anita that included two graded stakes victories. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America.
Winning four consecutive races is a feat, but the accomplishment is made even more impressive when half of the races are stakes events. Flavien Prat, the current leading rider at Santa Anita, entered the Saturday card at Santa Anita with seven total mounts and three in four of the scheduled stakes races.
However, Prat’s win streak did not start until the sixth race of the card, with a win aboard Fabozzi ($16.20), upsetting the favorite by a neck in a full field of allowance optional claiming company. He won another allowance race with Avicii ($7.40) by over two lengths in the seventh race.
The streak continued with the final two races on the card, both graded stakes. In the $300,000 San Antonio (G2), Prat rode Hoppertunity ($7.00) to a one-length victory over post-time favorite Mor Spirit, completing the Bob Baffert exacta. Baffert, Prat and Hoppertunity previously teamed up to win the 2016 edition of the San Antonio and finished third in the 2016 Dubai World Cup (G1).
The last race of the day was the $200,000 San Marcos Stakes (G2). Prat was aboard Isotherm ($17.20) for the first time in the colt’s second Santa Anita start, winning by half a length for trainer George Weaver.
In addition to his four wins on the card, Prat finished third in the Palo Verde Stakes (G2) with Ike Walker on Saturday and was second to Unique Bella in the Sunday’s Las Virgines (G2) aboard Mopotism. He led North American jockeys for the week with stakes earnings that totaled $366,841.
Prat adds nine wins to his 2017 statistics, which total 24 wins in 90 starts. His wins last week came from just 22 starts, giving him a win rate of 41%. He finished second and third in eight more races for an in-the-money rate of 77%.
As the leading rider by earnings for the week, Prat added $629,845 in earnings to his 2017 total. He has earned $1,415,300 to date in 2017, placing him fifth among all North American jockeys by earnings for the year.
Prat is the leading jockey for the current Santa Anita meet by both earnings and wins. He was the co-leading rider during the Del Mar summer meet in 2016 and topped the rider standings again in the fall until an accident sidelined him until the start of the Santa Anita meet in December.
